SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported 173 new COVID-19 cases and five additional deaths on Thursday.

The rolling, seven-day average for positive tests is 156 per day, the report says. Across the state 2,137 people received COVID-19 tests since the previous day's report. Children accounted for 19 of the new cases.

Now 156 people are hospitalized with the coronavirus in Utah, a decrease of 16 since the previous day.

Health care workers administered 1,795 vaccine doses since Wednesday's report, bringing total doses given in the state to 4,982,947.

In the last 28 days, people who are unvaccinated are at a five times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 2.1 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 1.9 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, the health department said.

Compared to those who received booster shots, unvaccinated residents are at 20.3 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 5.2 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and two times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19, according to health officials.

Two previously reported deaths were removed from the state's total after further investigation. The deaths reported Thursday include:

  • A Weber County man, between the ages of 65 and 84, who was a long-term care facility resident when he died.
  • A Utah County woman, older than 85, not hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County man, 45-64, hospitalized.
  • A Davis County woman, older than 85, unknown hospitalization status.
