Utah health officials report 396 COVID-19 cases, 6 deaths Thursday

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported six COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, along with 396 new cases.

The rolling seven-day average for new cases is now 367 per day. The seven-day average for positive tests is 12.4%, continuing a decline after the surge caused by the omicron variant, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The average percent of positive tests dipped below 12.4% in the middle of December 2021, but outside of that four-day time period, the average rate has not been under 12.4% since July 2021.

The health department also reported another 4,063 people who were tested and 3,488 who were vaccinated since Wednesday's report.

There has been a total of 4,954,299 vaccines administered in the state since they became available in December 2020, according to health department statistics, and 74.5% of Utahns over age 5 have received at least one dose. Of those, two-thirds are considered fully vaccinated and one-third have received a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

School children account for 52 of the 396 new cases. Of those cases, 24 were children between ages 5 and 10, 13 were ages 11-13, and 15 were ages 14-17.

Currently, 299 people are hospitalized in the state with COVID-19. Of those hospitalized patients, 64 are in intensive care units, according to the health department.

One of the six deaths reported on Thursday occurred over a month ago, while five occurred within the last month.

The latest deaths include:

  • A Salt Lake County man between 65 and 84, who was hospitalized when he died.
  • A Davis County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County woman, 65-84, long-term care facility resident.
  • A Washington County man, 25-44, hospitalized.
  • A Washington County man, over 85, hospitalized.
  • A Davis County woman, over 85, long-term care facility resident.
