SALT LAKE CITY — Is Yoeli Childs coming home?

The former BYU star had his NBA G League rights acquired Thursday by the Salt Lake City Stars, sending the rights of returning player Yogi Ferrell and a 2022 first-round draft pick to the Capital City Go-Go in exchange for the Bingham High product.

The 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward hasn't played since appearing in three games earlier this season for MHP Riesen in the German BBL before the two sides parted ways following a knee injury. Childs, 24, averaged 8.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game the last time he played in the G League, with the Erie Skyhawks during 12 games of the 2020-21 season, including five starts.

Now he could be coming home to play for the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz.

In four seasons at BYU, Childs started 111 of 119 games, averaging 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks with 45 double-doubles en route to first-team All-West Coast Conference honors following the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons.

The former Bingham big man who led the Miners to a Class 6A state title as a senior in 2016 also played with the LA Lakers during the 2021 NBA Summer League, and spent time doing "runs' with Utah-based pro-am Powder League in Draper before he departed for Germany.

In an unrelated move, the Stars also waived forward Derrick Griffin and activated former Boise State standout Derrick Alston Jr. from the club's health and safety protocols. Griffin played in just two games for the Stars.

The Stars, who fell to 0-2 with Monday's 103-93 home loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, return to Lifetime Activities Center in Taylorsville to face the South Bay Lakers on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST.
