JAPAN — Do you ever feel overwhelmed by gargantuan challenges? The past year or so has certainly brought its share of these daunting experiences, and it's easy to understand why so many people are feeling defeated.

But perhaps this video montage of Shonanzakura Sota, who recently retired from sumo wrestling in Japan, will provide a bit of inspiration.

Undersized and completely lacking in technical prowess, Shonanzakura Sota racked up the worst record in sumo history: 3 wins and 238 losses. At one point, he had a string of 104 consecutive defeats.

Yet, Shonanzakura Sota kept showing up. He practiced with laser focus and was often commended for the kind and respectful way that he treated others. At times he appeared to dive straight to the ground in matches, which attracted criticism. But these incidences were usually due to injuries that he was attempting to fight through.

There's no doubt that Shonanzakura Sota was a terrible sumo wrestler. Like an overzealous wolverine, he threw himself into the ring again and again. But he was also a disciplined competitor who maintained belief in himself amidst the most absurdly imbalanced competitions. And his love for sumo wrestling never wavered.

We could all benefit from a bit of the Shonanzakura Sota spirit in our lives. We might get knocked down on a daily basis, but that doesn't mean we need to — and it certainly doesn't mean we need to lose our love for the brighter things.

So the next time life comes charging at you like a scantily clad sumo warrior, don't lose heart. You might get tossed from the ring, but the way you handle yourself outside of the ring is what will truly define your legacy.
