SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's current wave of COVID-19 cases continued to rise Thursday as 1,280 new cases were reported, as well as 14 more deaths due to the disease.
The new cases were confirmed out of 7,878 people tested, with a 16.2% positive rate, according to the Utah Department of Health. The rolling seven-day average daily of positive tests is 1,010 per day, and the average rate of people who test positive is 13.6%.
Five of the deaths reported on Thursday occurred before July 19, officials said.
Health care workers administered 9,280 more vaccine doses since the previous day, bringing the total number of vaccinations given in the state to 3,166,428.
Officials with the health department noted Thursday that in the last 28 days, unvaccinated residents have experienced 5.5 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 6.3 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 4.9 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated residents.
Of the more than 1,200 new cases confirmed Thursday, just nine were breakthrough cases, meaning the person had been fully vaccinated. Ten additional hospitalizations were among breakthrough patients, and two of the newly-confirmed coronavirus fatalities were also fully vaccinated, according to health department data.
Data shows that breakthrough cases have been confirmed in 7,757 people in Utah, 460 of whom have required hospitalization and 32 who have died. The death rate of fully vaccinated coronavirus patients stands at 0.00227%.
Now, 399 people in the state are hospitalized with the disease, 162 of whom are being treated in intensive care units.
The latest deaths bring Utah's death toll due to the disease to 2,563. They include:
