SANDY — Police responding to a crash in Sandy on Sunday discovered that the teenage driver had actually been shot.
About 9:30 p.m. Sunday, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls of a person driving erratically on 700 East. Investigators believe the 17-year-old driver lost consciousness due to his injuries, causing the vehicle he was driving to go off the road and crash into a sign near 8600 South, said Sandy Police Sgt. Clayton Swensen.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the teen had been shot in the shoulder. At least four bullet holes were found in the passenger side door and window, Swensen said.
The boy, who is from Midvale, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Swensen said police did not receive any calls about a shooting and as of Monday did not know where the shooting took place or a possible motive for it.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
