SALT LAKE CITY — A 6-year-old girl died in a rollover crash on I-80 near the Utah-Wyoming border on Wednesday evening, authorities said.
Just before 6 p.m., a 2005 Chevy Tahoe was eastbound on I-80 about 6 miles from the Wyoming state line, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety. There were six people in the Tahoe, ranging in age from 6 to 42, according to the release.
The Tahoe driver fell asleep, officials said, and when the road curved to the right, the vehicle went off the left side and into the median. The driver then overcorrected, which caused the vehicle to roll several times.
Three people in the Tahoe weren't wearing seat belts and suffered serious injuries, the news release says. One was flown in a medical helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City. The 6-year-old girl, who was one of the three not restrained, was taken in an ambulance to a hospital and later died from her injuries. She was not identified.
Further details about the crash were not available, as it remains under investigation.
