CENTERFIELD, Sanpete County — A parolee from Colorado was arrested in central Utah after police say he led an officer on a high speed chase, crashed and then carjacked another woman's vehicle to get away.
Parker Chase Avondet, 21, was booked into the Sanpete County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of aggravated robbery, failing to remain at the scene of a crash involving injury, reckless driving, failing to stop for police, speeding, two counts of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and using license plates registered to another vehicle.
Monday night, Avondet was spotted traveling 95 mph in a 45 mph zone on Main Street in Centerfield, according to a police booking affidavit. A police officer attempted to pull him over, but said Avondet continued to speed away on U.S. 89
"The vehicle continued at high rates of speeds through Sanpete County into Sevier County. I was unable to keep visual on the vehicle due to terrain and the vehicle's high rate of speed. The pursuit was terminated in Redmond with the last known direction of vehicle travel north in Redmond," the affidavit states.
A short time later, a crash was reported on U.S. 89 at the state Route 256 junction. Police say one of the vehicles involved was the one that fled from police.
"A female passenger was stuck inside the vehicle as a result of the accident and seriously injured. The driver was not on scene," according to the affidavit.
Police said they learned that Avondet had flagged down another motorist who stopped to help, then assaulted the woman and took her car.
Inside the vehicle that had fled — which was determined to be stolen out of Colorado — police found heroin and methamphetamine, the affidavit says.
On Tuesday, police learned that Avondet was still in Sanpete County and attempting to flee back to Colorado. He was found that night "in a family member's vehicle, concealing himself in the trunk," police wrote.
