MILLCREEK — Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini says a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex under construction on Wednesday afternoon caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
The fire was to blame for the large column of smoke visible across the Salt Lake Valley on Wednesday evening, according to Unified Fire Authority officials. Fire crews were on the scene at 1297 E. Miller Ave. shortly before 6 p.m.
Unified Fire Authority official Ryan Love said that one woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and is currently in stable condition. There were no other injuries reported, said Love.
Silvestrini directed traffic at the scene and said he had seen flames shooting up at least 30 feet above the structure. He reported that the owner of the building said the damage was expected to be a $15 million to $20 million loss. The building next door, which houses several businesses, also suffered some damage. Fourteen businesses were affected, Unified Fire Authority tweeted.

Fire officials said Wednesday night that members of the fire crew would remain on the scene overnight to make sure there are no flare-ups and to begin investigating the cause.
During the blaze, Millcreek city officials asked people to avoid the intersection near 3300 South and 1300 East, as well as Brickyard Plaza. They added that there were downed power lines on 1300 East. According to officials, the road closure remains in effect until further notice.
Rocky Mountain Power issued a tweet Wednesday afternoon saying it was aware of an outage in Millcreek affecting approximately 2,510 people. The company said the cause was under investigation and did not indicate whether it was due to the fire. Power was restored as of 8:44 p.m.
