MURRAY — An alleged argument over a vehicle led to one man fatally shooting another in Murray on Wednesday, according to police.
Patrick Koaneil Brown, 42, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of shooting in the direction of a person and being a restricted person in possession of a firearm.
Police were initially called about 1 p.m. to the area of 4500 S. State where they found the victim, 39-year-old Darnell Brown, lying in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a police affidavit. Brown was lying next to his vehicle which had other people inside it at the time of the shooting, police stated. One other person suffered facial cuts, the affidavit states.
Detectives quickly learned from others that Patrick Brown was the alleged gunman. Patrick Brown and Darnell Brown are not related, Murray police said Thursday.
Police searched multiple locations of places Patrick Brown was associated with. They found him at an undisclosed residence.
"The suspect surrendered during police callouts and made a spontaneous statement that he was going to call police and turn himself in," according to the affidavit.
When questioned by investigators, Patrick Brown said he and the victim had been arguing over a vehicle, the affidavit states.
"Both parties then followed each other in separate vehicles out of an apartment parking complex where the argument originally occurred. Patrick Brown said that a collision occurred between his and the victim's vehicle at 4500 S. State State," according to the affidavit.
He told police he then put his vehicle in reverse to back away from the crash, turned around, and fired several rounds as he drove past Darnell Brown's vehicle, the affidavit states. Detectives later collected a cellphone video from a witness that recorded the incident, according to the affidavit.
"This shooting occurred in a busy area with high traffic, which showed no regard for human life or public safety," police stated in their affidavit.
