BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — Police have released the identity of the motorcyclist who died in a crash in Big Cottonwood Canyon which temporarily closed state Route 190 on Saturday.

The crash happened at milepost 5 near the Storm Mountain area. A male motorcyclist in his late 50s was driving down the canyon Saturday afternoon when he crossed the yellow line to pass traffic and struck a passenger car head-on, Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler confirmed on Sunday.

Michael C. Burkey, 55, of South Jordan, was wearing a helmet but died at the scene, Unified police stated. No one in the passenger car was injured.

Cutler said the investigation still ongoing to find out how fast the motorcyclist was going.
