SALT LAKE CITY — A man was sent to the hospital Sunday evening to be treated for burns he suffered from a fire at an abandoned warehouse.
Salt Lake City Fire Department Capt. Tony Stowe said the warehouse at 320 W. 800 South was supposed to be vacant.
"There were reports of smoke coming from the structure, and upon the crew's arrival there was a male that was pretty severely burned," said Stowe. The captain said firefighters "sent him to the burn unit and then ramped this up to a second alarm."
Due to the size of the structure, the fire department had to call for additional help. Within 10-12 minutes, the fire was completely extinguished.
Stowe said because the building was made of concrete, the fire produced a lot of smoke and didn't spread throughout the structure.
"It took them quite a bit to open it up, ventilate it and find the seat of that fire," he said. "We are still on scene there. It mostly just took us a long time to be able to search the warehouse area and make sure there was no additional victims, and make sure the fire hadn't spread anywhere."
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
