CLEARFIELD — A man is in custody Sunday after police say he admitted to shooting and injuring another man who he argued with at a Clearfield party.
Michael Hernandez, 21, was booked into Davis County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault and attempted homicide.
Clearfield dispatchers received calls about the shooting around 12:49 a.m. Sunday. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the area of 150 North and 500 West.
When police arrived, they saw people fleeing the scene on foot and in vehicles. They determined a party with more than 50 attendees had occurred at 492 W. 150 North.
Police located a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound in his arm; he was in a vehicle and preparing to leave, police said in a news release.
Medical personnel responded and transported the man to McKay-Dee Hospital via ambulance, where he was treated and released.
Officers and detectives interviewed multiple witnesses and were able to identify Hernandez as a suspect. He was taken into custody and interviewed, at which point police say he admitted to firing the weapon after getting in a fight at the party.
According to a police booking affidavit, Hernandez told police he tried to get people to leave, but a group of four or five males "were giving him a hard time about leaving" the Deseret News reported. Hernandez said the men assaulted him, so he got a gun from his home and fired five rounds outside as the men ran away, according to the newspaper.
"A search warrant was executed at the residence and evidence related to the shooting was located," officials wrote, "including the suspected firearm."
Clearfield police thanked other agencies for their assistance in the case, including North Davis fire, the Davis County Sheriff's Office, the sheriff's department crime lab, Layton police, Clinton police, and Syracuse police.
The identity of the injured man was not released Sunday.
