SALT LAKE CITY — A red-tailed black cockatoo that escaped from the Tracy Aviary Friday was located nearby Saturday morning.
An aviary spokesperson said the cockatoo, named Matilda, was "out flying with her keeper when she was caught in a wind gust and blown off" the property Friday afternoon about 3 p.m. Thanks to a tip from neighbors, Matilda was located Saturday just a block from the aviary.
"Many thanks to our community for your support and kind words during this stressful time," the aviary wrote on Facebook, adding that its employees had a "long night" looking for the bird.

This isn't the first time the Tracy Aviary has had to wrangle the renegade cockatoo. Matilda also escaped the aviary in January 2020, only to be found safe in a Liberty Park tree nearby.
Matilda escaped for the first time in 2013, when she was less than a year old, and wasn't recovered for three days.
