SALT LAKE CITY — It is a big week for the Salt Lake City School District.

For the first time in nearly a year, fourth through 12th grade students have the option to head back to in-person learning at most schools.

Secondary students are split by last name, and they only go two days a week. So the other half of the seventh through 12th grade students start Tuesday.

Wednesday will remain a remote day throughout the school district.

High school students are required to get a negative COVID-19 test before they can attend class. They held a round of testing over the weekend at the high schools. They also held orientation for ninth graders who not been inside their high school yet.

This morning, we say a great big Welcome Back to our high school, middle school, and 4th-6th grade students who are choosing the option to return to in-person learning. #SLCschools #uted

Teachers have told those secondary students to bring their laptops and headphones to be on Zoom in the building with their online classmates.

Elementary school grades have phased back in since the end of January. The rest of the elementary students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades were allowed to choose to go back Monday four days a week.

But it doesn't seem to include Hawthorne Elementary, which is a magnet ELP school. Parents there say they were not given a choice; the teachers want to stay remote. They are still working with the principal about that.
