Traffic moving after 'major accident' on SR 190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Four people were injured Sunday in a "major accident" that temporarily closed both directions of state Route 190 in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

A tweet from Unified police said three of the people involved suffered only minor injuries, but one is in serious condition. It added that two cars were involved in the crash.

The crash occurred about 6 miles up the canyon at the "S-turn," officials said. At 5:18 p.m., the Utah Department of Transportation tweeted that downhill lanes will be open as a second tow truck works to get one of the vehicles off the canyon. Both lanes of traffic fully reopened at 7:15 p.m. after both vehicles were removed from the embankment.

"Sitting in traffic sure ain't fun, but thank you for your patience as UPD @FireAuthority worked to get those involved in the slide-offs out of the canyon," read the tweet.

Photos from the scene show the vehicles off the roadway and down an embankment. "It is expected to take some time to get the vehicles back up on the road," police said.

A Unified fire spokesman said earlier that heavy rescue technicians were "working to extricate rollover victims" and to "get traffic moving." No details of the circumstances of the crash were immediately available.

SR 190 was busy Sunday as winter sports enthusiasts traveled to and from resorts like Solitude and Brighton after heavy weekend snow.
