WANSHIP, Summit County — A couple who claimed they were driving home from a funeral in California was arrested in Summit County after police reported finding more than 100 pounds of marijuana in their car.
Waylon K. Mayer, 40, and Laura L. Parker, 62, were booked into the Summit County Jail for investigation of possessing 100 pounds of marijuana or more. Mayer was also issued a speeding ticket.
On Thursday, Mayer and Parker were pulled over on I-80 near Wanship for speeding, according to troopers.
"The female passenger informed me that they were returning home from her sister's funeral in Oceanside, California. They informed me that they spent the night in Wendover, Nevada," a Utah Highway Patrol trooper wrote in a police affidavit.
Both Mayer and Parker had Illinois driver's licenses.
A second trooper with a drug-sniffing police K-9 arrived at the scene and walked around the vehicle, according to the affidavit.
"(Police service dog) Axel gave a positive indication to the odor of illegal substance at the passenger side rear of the vehicle," the affidavit states. "A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of 100, 1-pound packages of green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana in the trunk along with six packages of brown waxy substance that appeared to be marijuana wax that weighed 1 pound apiece."
Mayer and Parker were then placed under arrest.
