LAYTON — A child is in serious condition after being hit by a truck in a Layton crosswalk Monday afternoon.
The 7-year-old girl was crossing the street just before 3:30 p.m. near 1600 North and 1725 West in Layton when she was struck by a truck traveling east near the top of a T-shaped intersection where "you would normally cross," Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman told KSL on Wednesday.
"We just got an update this afternoon," Lyman said. "She is still in quite serious condition at Primary Children's Hospital."
The 35-year-old male driver of the truck was there when Layton police and fire personnel arrived on scene and has been cooperating with police, Lyman added. A sobriety and toxicology test was administered as part of the investigation, but results weren't immediately known.
Speed is also part of the investigation, Lyman added, though there was no significant indication that it was a leading factor in the crash. There were no passengers in the truck beyond the 35-year-old driver.
No charges were immediately filed, though some charges are likely pending, Lyman said.
The child's mother was among the first responders on the scene. Several witnesses have indicated that the driver left for a short time and returned to the accident scene, but police are still investigating those tips, Lyman said.
