SALT LAKE CITY — A boy who police say was injured after sliding onto a knife that he was looking for had to be hoisted out of a Cache County canyon on Monday and taken to a hospital.
The unusual incident started Monday afternoon while two juveniles were hiking in Green Canyon above North Logan. The Cache County Sheriff's Office office did not release the boys' ages, but the Cache Valley Daily reported the boys are in their teens.
The boys went "off-trail hiking," the sheriff's office said in a statement, using a large knife to cut through the brush. The knife somehow became lost and as the boys were looking for it, they "slid down a hill on their backsides," the sheriff's office said.
One of the boys slid onto the knife, "causing significant injuries."
Due to the location of the boys, two helicopters were dispatched to the scene, where one used a hoist to get the injured boy off the mountain and to a waiting ambulance at the mouth of the canyon. Crews were able to "stabilize" the boy inside the ambulance and then used a helicopter to transport him to Ogden Regional Medical Center.
Correction: An earlier version said the boy was taken to Primary Children's Hospital, but he was taken to Ogden Regional Medical Center.
