SALT LAKE CITY — An injured hiker was rescued but in critical condition after falling off a cliff on the south side of Neffs Canyon on Thursday, Salt Lake County Sheriff's officials said.
The county's search and rescue team was called out around 4:30 p.m. after the hiker had fallen and landed on a steep slope in snowy brush and trees. The hiker was reported to have serious injuries so Unified police called Life Flight to conduct a hoist operation, officials wrote on Facebook.
SAR deployed three teams to the site: a hasty team to run to the patient and assess the situation, a team with climbing gear to lift the patient and carry him out if necessary, and a third team as a backup.
Once Life Flight arrived, officials determined they would be able to hoist the hiker from where he had fallen and lowered a medic to the ground. Search and Rescue then arrived on scene and helped the medic prepare the hiker to be hoisted and flown.
The rescue took around two hours, according to Salt Lake Sheriff's Office.
Further details, including the identity of the hiker and more information on the extent of his injuries, were not released.
