EAGLE MOUNTAIN — A fifth person has been arrested in connection with a possible retaliation attack involving multiple shots fired inside an Eagle Mountain home occupied by a couple and their 12-year-old son.
Irwin Aldair Perez-Barrera, 18, of Provo, was booked into the Utah County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of three counts of aggravated assault and 11 counts of felony discharge of a firearm.
On Sunday, two cars drove to an Eagle Mountain house and seven people got out of the vehicles. One person was armed with a rifle, another a handgun and a third person had a baseball bat, according to police affidavits.
The group broke out the glass of the back door and fired six rounds into the house while others threw rocks at the windows, according to the affidavit. The group then walked to the front of the house where a minivan was parked in the driveway and vandalized it, including shooting it five times.
No injuries were reported inside the house.
Investigators learned the shooting may have been in retaliation for an incident involving the family's 16-year-old son, who was not in the house at the time of the incident. Police say the son is a suspect in assault case on Nov. 25. In that incident, a vehicle rammed into another car allegedly driven by David Lopez.
Lopez, 18, and his brother, Hector Lopez-Tamayo, 21, both of Orem, were the first to be arrested in the case. Cesar Martin Barragan, 19, of Orem and a juvenile were arrested in connection with the case Tuesday.
Wednesday, Perez-Barrera was arrested at his home in Provo. Perez was the driver of one of the vehicles, according to police. He was allegedly sleeping at a friend's house in Orem when he "woke up to multiple males talking in the living room and they told him it was time to go and wanted to take his car," the affidavit states.
Perez told police he was not comfortable with them taking his car, so he drove.
"Irwin was aware they were going to get revenge for what the other kids did to David's vehicle but he did not know exactly what was planned," according to the affidavit.
Perez told police he saw a baseball bat, but assumed the group planned on damaging the 16-year-old boy's vehicle. He said he stayed in the car when they arrived in Eagle Mountain, and then heard gunshots before the rest of the group returned to his car, the affidavit states.
