SALT LAKE CITY — A Real Salt Lake player has tested positive for COVID-19, the club announced Friday.

The player, who was not identified, is self-isolating and will continue to do so until he is medically cleared, according to RSL.

"In accordance with CDC guidelines, the player will continue to self-isolate until medically cleared under the close supervision of the club's medical staff," the club said in a statement.

All other first-team players and staff have returned negative COVID-19 tests, and players and staff will be "closely monitored through the weekend," RSL said.

Real Salt Lake is scheduled to play Sporting Kansas City Sunday at Rio Tinto Stadium at 4:30 p.m. MT. Sporting also received a positive test result from an unidentified player, the club announced Thursday. The two players were among eight new positives discovered from Major League Soccer's latest round of tests, which included 6,359 samples from 1,475 individuals between Oct. 29 and Nov. 4, the league confirmed Friday.

Earlier on Friday afternoon, University of Utah athletics announced that its Saturday game season-opener against Arizona was canceled due to "a number of positive COVID-19 cases among student-athletes within the football program" over the last 24 hours.

Utah saw a new record-high 2,987 COVID-19 cases on Friday.
