OGDEN — A man armed with two guns was safely taken into custody early Tuesday in Ogden after running from police and firing one round, according to officers.

Just after 1 a.m., an Ogden police officer pulled over a gold Mercedes in the 2500 block of Washington Boulevard for a suspected license plate violation. Four people were in the vehicle, including the driver who was on parole, according to a police affidavit. They were all asked to step out of the car.

As the passengers were getting out, a glass pipe used to smoke drugs could be heard breaking on the ground, according to police. Officers then searched the car and found more drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and dryer sheets — something typically used "by drug users and smugglers to attempt to mask the odor of illicit narcotics so that K-9s do not detect the narcotics," the affidavit states.

As officers were checking the criminal backgrounds of each person in the car, they learned that Jayden David Peterson, 27, of Clearfield, was on probation with Adult Probation and Parole and was wanted for eight counts of violating a protective order, the affidavit states. When officers told Peterson he was under arrest for his warrants, he ran, police say.

As Peterson was running, officers noticed he was "reaching with his right hand in his waistband and appeared to be attempting to grab something from his waist," the affidavit states. Peterson continued to ignore commands to stop as he ran through the parking garage of a motel.

"As Jayden was still digging into his waist and I was about to lose site (sight) of Jayden fearing that he was reaching for a weapon, I deployed my department-issued Taser, striking Jayden in the back. As the taser was deployed I heard a gunshot go off and Jayden fell forward with a black with brown handle handgun sliding out in front of Jayden," the affidavit states.

It was also later discovered that the gunshot heard was from Jayden firing a round while manipulating one of the two firearms in his possession.

As two officers immediately restrained Peterson, he told them he was still in possession of a second gun, the affidavit says.

"It was also later discovered that the gunshot heard was from Jayden firing a round while manipulating one of the two firearms in his possession," police wrote in the report.

No one was injured by the shot. One of his guns was determined to be stolen out of Farmington. After his arrest, officers found a large amount of methamphetamine in his fanny pack that was packaged for selling, according to the affidavit. Police said he was also carrying "three large knives that were attached to his belt and inside of his pockets."

Peterson was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of two counts of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, drug possession with intent to distribute, theft of a firearm, failing to stop at the command of an officer, two counts of illegally carrying a concealed weapon, discharge of a firearm, two counts of drug possession, three counts of unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
