TOOELE — A truck driver who allegedly caused a crash and then ran from his rig was arrested after police found him and a large amount of drugs.
Charles Boyd Montoya, 42, was booked into the Tooele County Jail for investigation of drug distribution, DUI, failing to remain at the scene of an injury accident and unsafe lane travel.
Tuesday morning, Tooele police responded to the intersection of 200 West and state Route 112 on a report of a semitractor-trailer crashing into another semi, according to a police affidavit.
“Witnesses stated the driver of the demolished truck had exited the rubble and left running from the crash scene,” the affidavit states.
Montoya was found hiding near a park. He had slurred speech and “large dilated pupils,” according to the affidavit.
Near the park where Montoya was found hiding, police found “a large quantity of crystal-like substance that appeared to be methamphetamine,” the affidavit states. Inside his wrecked semi, police found several prescription bottles. Other drug-related paraphernalia was found inside his backpack, the affidavit states.
“It was highly suspected Mr. Montoya was under the influence of illegal drugs or prescription narcotics at the time of the accident,” according to the affidavit.
Montoya, who has lived in Salt Lake County and Wyoming, according to court records, has a lengthy criminal history in Utah.
