SALT LAKE CITY — A fire at a meat packing plant in Tremonton forced the evacuation of nearby residents Friday morning, police said.
Flames were visible at the West Liberty Foods plant near 705 N. 2000 West in Tremonton.
Garland Fire Department posted on Facebook about the fire just before 7 a.m. Fire crews from Garland, Tremonton, Fielding, and Brigham City were responding to the blaze, the Facebook post said.
As of 8 a.m., the fire was mostly put out, according to Tremonton Police Chief Kurt Fertig.
"It was a really big blaze," he said.
Employees at the plant, as well as some homes and businesses in the surrounding area, were evacuated because of some concern that the fire might spread to some chemical tanks at the plant, Fertig said. However, fire crews responded quickly and were able to isolate the blaze to one area of the building to make sure that it didn't spread, he said.
The evacuation order was lifted shortly after 7:30 a.m., and people are now returning to their homes, Fertig added.
Several employees of the plant had minor burn injuries and were taken to the hospital to be evaluated, Fertig said. He did not say how many employees were transported. No firefighters were injured, he added.
The damage the fire caused is still unknown, but Fertig said it could have been worse.
"The fire (department) did a great job and we’re grateful it wasn’t worse than it was," Fertig said.
