CACHE COUNTY — Officials said Wednesday evening they have found the body of a missing hiker.
He was identified Thursday as William Bud Mortensen, 77, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff's Office. Mortensen had been missing since Sunday, but search and rescue crews were notified of his disappearance on Tuesday.
Family members told authorities that Mortensen had not been in contact with him since Sunday morning, the release said. It was not unusual for him to go on a 3-5 mile hike on Sunday mornings, according to the release. Family members told authorities Mortensen's car was parked up Right Hand Fork of Logan Canyon and pinpointed an area where he often hiked.
The sheriff's search and rescue team, along with Mortensen's family and friends, searched the area Tuesday evening before calling the search off overnight, the release said. They resumed the search about 8 a.m. Wednesday via horseback, motorcycles, ATVs, and on foot. A Department of Public Safety helicopter also assisted with the search.
His body was recovered about 3:30 p.m.Wednesday in a heavily wooded area of Logan Canyon between the Girl Scout Camp and "Old Ephraim's Grave," according to Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen. Mortensen's cause of death was not provided.
The sheriff's office initially reported Wednesday that Mortensen was 76, but clarified Thursday that he was 77.
