4 students test positive among 287 students quarantined at Utah State

Utah State University has released just over half of the four dorms quarantined after wastewater samples revealed elevated traces of COVID-19. Four students have self-reported positive cases of the novel coronavirus, USU news director Emilie Wheeler told KSL. Those students will remain in quarantine and under medical care. More than 80% of test results have been returned to the university, the bulk of which reported negative results from the 287 students living in the four dormitories. Wheeler said 29 suites — just over half of the quarantined rooms — have been reopened. A few students returned home to self-quarantine, Wheeler said, but those numbers only impacted about a dozen students. Additionally, several suites are under quarantine while awaiting just one or two students to self-report their tests, while other roommates have already confirmed to test negative. “The students received their results first; it’s their data,” Wheeler said. “But then we ask them to fill out a questionnaire online.“We anticipate getting (the 20% of remaining results) sometime today or overnight, whenever they have time to log on and report those.” The university will update the remaining results online at usu.edu/today. — Sean Walker, KSL.com

20 active cases of COVID-19 in Jordan School District

The Jordan School District sent a letter to parents Thursday clarifying the impact of COVID-19 on district schools, employees and students after the first two weeks of the school year.The district identified 20 active cases of COVID-19, including 19 students, according to the letter obtained by KSL. Four classes have been quarantined, as authorized by the school board.The district counts more than 56,000 students and 6,000 employees, as well as more than 10,000 different classes at its area schools, including high schools at Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton, West Jordan, Valley and Southpointe adult high school, as well as the district’s applied technology center.Jordan schools returned to class Aug. 24.— Sean Walker, KSL.com

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert providing COVID-19 update as state sees 504 cases, 4 deaths

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 504 from Wednesday, with four more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.The state estimates that there are now 7,917 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 394, according to the health department. 46 inmates at Cache County Jail test positive for COVID-19

A total of 46 inmates at the Cache County Jail have tested positive for COVID-19, authorities said.An inmate at the jail began experiencing symptoms of the disease on Aug. 22, according to a Wednesday news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office. Two cell blocks at the jail that had contact with the inmate were immediately quarantined, and the inmate was tested, the release said.The inmate’s test returned with a positive result, and on Aug. 31, all inmates from the two cell blocks were tested for the disease.—Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah rental company owner admits to Paycheck Protection Program fraud

A South Jordan rental company owner previously convicted for fraud has admitted in federal court to illegally obtaining a Paycheck Protection Program loan through the coronavirus relief bill.Michael Leroi Douros, 64, pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud, two counts of making a false statement to a bank and money laundering.U.S. Attorney John Huber said Congress created the program to help people during the COVID-19 pandemic.— Dennis Romboy, KSL

Jobless claims fall to 881,000 but layoffs remain elevated

The number of laid-off Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to a still-elevated 881,000 last week, evidence that the viral pandemic keeps forcing many businesses to slash jobs.The latest figures, released Thursday by the Labor Department, suggest that nearly six months after the eruption of the coronavirus, the economy is still struggling to sustain a recovery and rebuild a job market that was devastated by the recession. In the previous week, more than 1 million had sought jobless aid.All told, the government said that 13.3 million people are continuing to receive traditional jobless benefits, up from 1.7 million a year ago.—Associated Press

Parents could get more information on COVID-19 in schools

The Salt Lake County Health Department could soon launch a dashboard that would show which schools have been shut down because of COVID-19. The Granite School District wants to give parents even more information.During the district’s school board meeting, the board debated whether they could tell the public how many COVID-19 cases have been detected on each campus.Many on the board, like President Karyn Winder, felt more information would help parents make better decisions and cut down on all the rumors.—Kelli Pierce and Heather Kelly, KSL NewsRadio
