Man dies on Strawberry Reservoir after swimming to shore from capsized boat

Strawberry Reservoir at sunset on June 14, 2013. The reservoir is part of the Central Utah Project, which diverts water from the Colorado River and imports it to the Wasatch Front. Funding for the project has been reduced to $3.5 million in President Obama's proposed budget, which would mean completion of pipelines into Salt Lake County and southern Utah County would be delayed.

STRAWBERRY RESERVOIR, Wasatch County — One man died Tuesday after swimming to shore when a boat capsized on Strawberry Reservoir in Wasatch County.

The boat capsized before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Wasatch County Sheriff's Sgt. Josh Probst. Officials received a call that five people were in the water, but all five were able to swim to shore.

Shortly after they did, however, a 69-year-old man reported difficulty breathing and then stopped breathing. Family members and then first responders performed CPR on the man but were unsuccessful, Probst said.

The man's identity was not released Tuesday. Probst said the boaters had moved to Utah recently.

Probst said there was a storm over the reservoir when the boat capsized. "In that area, weather patterns can change rapidly," he said. "That, obviously, may be a contributor to the boat taking on water and capsizing."
