Health department reports another 458 Utah coronavirus cases

The Utah Department of Health on Saturday reported 458 new confirmed cases of COVID-19.That brings Utah to a total of 51,406 positive tests since the pandemic began. No new deaths from the disease in the state were reported Saturday, leaving the state's toll at 407 resident deaths.The state now estimates there are 7,658 active cases of COVID-19 in the state; 43,342 of the state's total cases are considered recovered. Currently, 119 Utahns are hospitalized with confirmed cases.The health department believes 3,057 total Utahns have been hospitalized for the virus at some point.— Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Payson officials take extra precautions to continue city celebrations

On Aug. 7, lifelong Payson resident Doug Welton went to Memorial Park to feast at the city’s 66th annual Salmon Supper. As he stood in line, 6 feet away from others, he scanned the area around him. The servers and patrons at the event were wearing face masks as the food was served. Tables were spread out along the park area to maintain social distancing, and there was no entertainment as there had been in years past.Things were very different, yet Welton was filled with gratitude that his hometown was still able to continue the tradition amid the COVID-19 pandemic when so many others had not been so lucky.However, Welton, who is also a member of the Payson City Council, had another lens to see the event through. Having been privy to many city meetings in the event planning stages, he knew all that went behind the scenes to be able to see this event through.— Arianne Brown, KSL.com Contributor

College towns growing alarmed over outbreaks

As waves of schools and businesses around the country are cleared to reopen, college towns are moving toward renewed shutdowns because of too many parties and too many COVID-19 infections among students.With more than 300 students at the University of Missouri testing positive for the coronavirus and an alarming 44% positivity rate for the surrounding county, the local health director Friday ordered bars to stop serving alcohol at 9 p.m. and close by 10 p.m.Iowa’s governor has ordered all bars shut down around The University of Iowa and Iowa State, while the mayor of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, did the same in the hometown of the state’s flagship university.“What we’re seeing in our violations is they’re coming late at night,” said Stephanie Browning, head of the health department for Columbia, Missouri. “Big groups gathering. They’re not wearing their masks, they’re not social distancing.”— Associated Press

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 391 on Friday, with four more deaths reported.

Larry H. Miller Group of Companies and the Salt Lake County Clerk’s office announced Vivint Arena and three Megaplex Theatres will serve as polling stations for the general election in November.

A well-known coronavirus model previously cited by the White House forecasts more than 317,000 U.S. deaths from COVID-19 by December.
