MURRAY — Murray police have identified a pedestrian hit and killed on I-15 on I-15 early Saturday morning.

The man was identified Sunday as Preston Scott Smith, 43

The hit-and-run occurred about 4:30 a.m. Saturday at the top of the 4500 South off-ramp in Murray, according to a news release from Utah Department of Public Safety. A white SUV was traveling south at the top of the ramp when it hit the pedestrian and continued on.

A citizen followed the SUV and called 911 to report it, according to the news release. Murray police located the SUV and stopped it. When they responded to 4500 South, they located the pedestrian deceased.

"Utah Highway Patrol is handling the investigation," the release says. "The driver is being investigated for impairment. It is unknown why the pedestrian was on the interstate."

The southbound 4500 off-ramp and the right lanes of I-15 were closed following the collision.
