ERDA, Tooele County — A jogger was hit and killed in an auto-pedestrian crash Thursday that investigators believe was caused by an impaired driver.
The incident happened about 6:15 a.m. on state Route 36 at Cimmarron Way in Erda. An adult male was hit and killed by a 2016 Ford Escape while running on the right shoulder of the road, according to the Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street.
The Ford “drifted off onto the shoulder and fatally struck the pedestrian,” according to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol. “Signs of impairment and alcohol use were observed from the driver.”

“A gut-wrenching and heartbreaking event for the family and friends of the victim ... and a really tough one for those 1st responders on scene,” the UHP tweeted Thursday morning.
One lane of state Route 36 going south was closed as troopers investigate the accident.
Neither information about the driver nor the victim was immediately released.
