SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police Saturday identified the man who died after allegedly firing a weapon inside a nightclub earlier that morning.
Gustav Denecamp, 27, was fatally shot by a club employee about 1:30 a.m., police say.
The incident happened at the Echo nightclub at 134 W. Pierpont Ave., according to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brett Olsen.
Olsen said the man fired a weapon and then was shot once by an employee who had his own gun. Denecamp went outside where responding officers attempted lifesaving measures, Olsen said, but he died at the scene.
No one else was injured, Olsen said.
Olsen said detectives are investigating the situation, but police do not yet know why the man began shooting.
"A couple" of other patrons were taken into custody at the scene, Olsen said, for interfering with police. Police said on Twitter they are "still investigating other reports of shots fired from patrons leaving the nightclub that occurred shortly after" the shooting.
Echo released its own statement on the shooting Saturday afternoon, stating: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that happened at our club Friday night. Thanks to the quick actions by an employee to stop the shooter, our patrons and staff were unharmed. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement to aid in their investigation and will continue our efforts to the best of our abilities to maintain a safe environment for our customers and staff."
