SALT LAKE CITY — A registered sex offender who has already served time in the Utah State Prison has been arrested again.

Marcelino Castillo, 35, was arrested Thursday in Tooele County by undercover officers conducting an online sting posing as juveniles. Castillo began chatting online with an officer posing as a 13-year-old girl on June 7, and “acknowledged the age of the child persona several times and even spoke about possibly getting into trouble, going to jail, that the 13-year-old child persona may be a sting/cop,” according to a police affidavit.

The online conversations became sexual in nature, the affidavit states, and Castillo eventually arranged to meet with the “girl.”

At the meeting location, police say Castillo initially told them he was in another unoccupied vehicle that was parked nearby, but was found a short time later and arrested.

He was booked into the Tooele County Jail for investigation of enticing a minor by internet and two counts of failing to register as a sex offender.

In 2014, Castillo was convicted in 4th District Court of unlawful sexual conduct with a juvenile, dealing in harmful materials to a minor and voyeurism. He was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison.

“Marcelino is facing new serious charges. Investigators have learned that Marcelino has also been involved in other cases and will likely be facing additional related felony charges for similar behavior involving what he believed to be minors,” according to the affidavit.
