SANDY — Fire damaged a trailer containing fireworks and sent flames at least 100 feet into the air outside a Smith's Food and Drug store in Sandy early Thursday morning, officials said.
Crews responded to the store at 2039 E. 9400 South about 1 a.m., according to a Sandy Fire Department spokesman. When crews arrived, they found rubbish and pallets underneath the trailer on fire near the loading dock at the back of the store.
Fireworks inside the trailer began to explode, sending flames 100 to 200 feet in the air before crews put out the fire. Smoke got into the store near the loading dock area and overhead sprinklers went off there.
Most of the damage was to the trailer, with minor fire, smoke and water damage to the loading dock area of the store.
The store was closed Thursday morning, KSL NewsRadio reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is considered suspicious.
