OREM, Utah (AP) -- City workers in cash-strapped Orem won't be getting a holiday bonus this year.
For the last eight years, employees have gotten bonuses ranging from $50 to $400.
But Assistant City Manager Jeff Pedersen says a sales tax shortfall has left the city without extra money for bonuses.
Instead, the city is offering a paid day off on Dec. 26. About 430 city workers will get a four-day weekend around the Christmas holiday.
Bruce Hammond, the city's human resources manager, says most employees seem to understand the city's tight financial situation.
In nearby Provo, the council approved bonuses for city employees earlier this month but said the criteria for handing them out needs to be reconsidered.
