The raid on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Yearning for Zion Ranch last April cost the state of Texas millions of dollars.
The estimate is $12.4 million. It includes more than $4 million that went to goods and services while polygamist mothers and children were kept at Fort Concho and the San Angelo Coliseum. Medicaid, foster care placement and security cost another $3.3 million. The state spent $1 million just on buses that transported the children to foster care facilities across Texas.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective services says it thinks those are the final costs of the operation. But it tells the Deseret News the $12.4 million estimate does not cover ongoing fees of caseworkers and lawyers. Lawyers can charge a maximum of $4,000 in hourly billing, as well as $750 for travel expenses.
