CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Backers of a two billion dollar plan to pipe water from the Utah-Nevada border to booming Las Vegas are pressing for state approval of the plan.
A hearing on the matter opened yesterday with word that four federal agencies were dropping their protests to the plan.
But critics, including Utah officials and the LDS church, continue in their opposition.
Some fear the plan to draw about 91-thousand acre-feet of water from Spring Valley could parch the area.
Utah officials are concerned about pumping groundwater from valleys that cross the Nevada-Utah boundary.
And the Mormon church says groundwater should not be pumped from Spring Valley until it's determined that will not harm the church and other water-rights holders.
