Utah State University fans are fighting the urge, but they're finding themselves cheering on BYU in the Cougars' rivalry clash against Utah this weekend.
Aggie fans traditionally hate the Cougars. When those two teams played on Oct. 3, fans started chanting "overrated" because BYU was winning by only 20 points.
But money creates strange bedfellows, and a $500,000 check is changing the Aggies' view on the Cougars.
Here's how it works: If BYU beats Utah and Boise State doesn't choke at Nevada or at home against Fresno State, the Broncos are into the BCS. Their payout, divided among WAC teams, will trickle down even to Utah State. The Aggies would get about $500,000.
Utah State fans haven't had much to cheer about. The team has won only eight games in five seasons. Coach Brent Guy was fired.
The good news is that $500,000 is more than enough to cover the new coach's salary for a year, if not almost two years. Or it might be enough for a new locker room.
