PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Lee Cummard scored a career-high 36 points and BYU extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 48 games with a 75-65 win over Long Beach State in the season-opener for both teams Friday.

Cummard scored eight points to spark a 10-2 run to open the second half, including a slashing layup that gave BYU its first lead in 20 minutes.

The teams then traded the lead seven times until Jimmer Fredette made a free throw with 9:23 to play to put BYU (1-0) ahead for good.

Cummard, the 2008 Mountain West Conference co-player of the year, added a game-high 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals.

Donovan Morris led Long Beach State (0-1) with 13 points. Stephan Gilling scored 12 points, and Cornel Williams added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Jonathan Tavernari scored 19 points for BYU. He scored 11 points in the final 7:45 to help seal the victory.
