EDINBURGH, Scotland, Sep 9, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- News that his daughter had just died was kept from acclaimed conductor Charles Mackerras before a concert in Edinburgh, The Scotsman reports.
The 80-year-old's daughter, Fiona had been critically ill with cancer in a London hospice and died Sept. 1, hours before her father was to conduct Beethoven's 9th Symphony at Usher Hall as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, the newspaper reported Saturday.
Friday night in London, a week after her death, Mackerras conducted Mozart's Symphony in D and Mass in C Minor at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms series. His agent said the concert was dedicated to his daughter's memory.
Mackerras was knighted for his services to music and is the first-ever holder of the Queen's Medal for Music.
