(KSL News) -- Fire officials credit a smoke detector with saving the lives of a Salt Lake family.

The smell of smoke woke up the mother, but she was sleeping upstairs and her daughters weren't with her.

Dennis McKone, Asst. to Fire Chief: "There were three little girls sleeping downstairs. Smoke detectors woke those girls up, so this is another case of smoke detectors saving lives."

The family was able to get out of the home safely.

An initial investigation shows the fire started in a utility room downstairs. Damage is estimated at $15-thousand.
