LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Here's a nice perk: Utah State University is looking at giving faculty members a full semester off -- with 90-percent pay -- for the birth or adoption of a child.

The earliest the plan could take effect is next August, if it gets the approval of Utah State President Stan Albrecht, his executive committee and the Board of Trustees.

The leave policy has the endorsement of the school's provost, its human-resources executives and two committees of the Faculty Senate.

Faculty members say Cache Valley's shortage of day-care options leaves them with little choice but to take time off to take care of their own infants.

An estimated seven to nine faculty members would take leave every year, with the school paying to hire instructors to replace them.
