NEW YORK, Sep 6, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Plans are reported to be forging ahead to bring Mel Brooks' classic film parody "Young Frankenstein" to the Broadway stage.

Brooks and writer Thomas Meehan have finished the first draft of the "Young Frankenstein" stage musical and director Susan Stroman is putting together a workshop presentation for potential financial backers, The New York Post reported Wednesday.

Sources said Brooks has asked Cloris Leachman to reprise her film role of Frau Blucher for the stage, the newspaper said. Gene Wilder played the title role on the silver screen, but it was unknown whether Brooks extended a similar invitation to him.

Broadway stars Shuler Hensley, Kristin Chenoweth and Marc Kudisch are on board for the workshop, which is set to take place in October.
