(KSL News) The Salt Lake City Police Department is warning women to be aware of their surroundings after a woman was raped at knifepoint in the middle of the day in a downtown parking lot.

Woman raped in downtown parking lot in broad daylight

Police say the woman parked her car in a lot at 400 South and Main Street Monday afternoon. As she walked toward her office, a man hiding under a car grabbed her ankles and pulled her down.

Police say rape by a complete stranger, especially during the day, is extremely rare.

"This is a really brazen act. This is not something I've ever seen before," says Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Robin Snyder. "They just don't happen very often, maybe once a year, if that, in Salt Lake City. And the fact that this happened in broad daylight makes it even more alarming."

The woman described the man as having strong body odor, and police believe he might be a transient.

Salt Lake police are asking for your help if you have any information about this case.
