Projections: Incumbents, Republicans dominate

(KSL News) Here are the results of the Dan Jones Exit Polls as the polls close at 8 p.m.

KSL TV EXIT POLL RESULTS

Not surprisingly, Republican John McCain is projected to carry Utah, although some might be surprised by the percentages.

U.S. President

  • John McCain (R) - 60%
  • Barack Obama (D) - 36%

It appears Incumbent Jon Huntsman Jr. dominated the race for governor with 79% of the vote.

Governor

  • Jon M. Huntsman (R) - 79%
  • Bob Springmeyer (D) - 17%
  • "Superdell" Dell Schanze (L) - 4%

Rob Bishop will return to Washington for a Fourth Term representing Utah's 1st Congressional District by drawing 64% of the vote.

U.S. House District 1

  • Rob Bishop (R) - 64%
  • Morgan Bowen (D) - 32%

Jim Matheson is projected to win his 5th term with 63% of the vote in the 2nd Congressional District.

U.S. House District 2

  • Jim Matheson (D) - 63%
  • Bill Dew (R) - 33%

It looks like Mr. Chaffetz goes to Washington. The newcomer who turned out a sitting congressman in a primary (Chris Cannon), claims 66% of the vote in the General Election.

U.S. House District 3

  • Jason Chaffetz (R) - 66%
  • Bennion Spencer (D) - 27%
  • Jim Noorlander (C) - 7%

Mark Shurtleff, still fighting a severe leg injury, wins one battle handily tonight. KSL Projects 73% of the vote will give him a third term.

Attorney General

  • Mark L. Shurtleff (R) - 73%
  • Jean Welch Hill (D) - 23%
  • W. Andrew McCullough (L) - 4%

Republican Richard Ellis survived an ugly primary contest in which he accused his opponent of offering him a bribe. KSL projects Ellis will win the Treasurer's office by 68%.

State Treasurer

  • Richard K. Ellis (R) - 68%
  • Dick Clark (D) - 32%

It appears the Salt Lake County Mayor easily won re-election with 65% of the vote.

Salt Lake County Mayor

  • Peter M. Corroon (D) - 65%
  • Michael Renckert (R) - 32%
  • Leonard Olds (C) - 3%

Randy Horiuchi fends off a strong challenge, and KSL projects he will win with 53% of the vote.

Salt Lake County Council at large

  • Randy Horiuchi (D) - 53%
  • Steven L. DeBry (R) - 47%

The $20-Million bond to rescue the Tracy Aviary is projected to pass easily with 72% of the vote.

Salt Lake County Prop 1(Tracy Aviary)

  • FOR - 72%
  • AGAINST - 28%

With 76% of the vote the $33 Million bond for Hogle Zoo should pass.

Salt Lake County Prop 2(Hogle Zoo)

  • FOR - 76%
  • AGAINST - 24%

The race for State House district 49 between Speaker Greg Curtis and challenger (D) Jay Seegmiller is too close to call.
