Investigators say it was poison that killed two dogs walking near City Creek canyon. Now they're trying to figure what it was and why it was there.

Signs are now posted along the Freedom Trail, warning people to keep their dogs on leashes.

On Monday, a Salt Lake woman was walking her two dogs when they suddenly became ill and eventually died.

Salt Lake County Animal Control Capt. Shon Hardy said it was poison, but there was still a lot they don't know. "Why the poison was there and, you know, and the reason for that; whether it was intentional or accidental, we're are not sure yet, and we are still looking into those possibilities," Hardy said.

He also said they recovered some items that may have contained the poison, and those items are being tested.
