Sam Penrod Reporting A Provo couple was honored today for helping to catch a bank robber this summer. Today the FBI handed out a reward to the couple for noticing something was wrong, calling the police and following the suspect long enough to get police on his trail.
Steven and Kimberly Roy were driving through their bank's drive through in July, that's when they could see bank employees seemed upset, so they waited as a man came out of the bank with a big bag
They started following the suspect and called 911. They kept their distance and were able to get the license plate of the bank robber. When the bank robber pulled into his house in Lehi, police were already waiting for him and he was arrested. The gun and stolen money was found in his car.
Today the FBI gave the Roy's a $500- dollar reward for helping police arrest the suspect.
Tim Fuhrman, Special Agent In Charge, Salt Lake City FBI Officer: "They maintained their safety, their own situation, they didn't get overly involved. They didn't barge into the bank because they didn't know what the situation was. This is even the way we train our officers and agents, to make sure they maintain their individual safety, first and foremost."
Kimberly Roy, "It was kind of an instinct of, this isn't right, he's robbing a bank and these are people we know and respect and trust who help us, and someone stop him."
Steven Roy: "I still don't feel like we did a lot, but the information we did give made it easier for the police to apprehend the suspect."
The suspect is facing several charges and is still awaiting trial. As for the Roys, they say they plan to take their $500 reward and do some shopping.
