Gov. Herbert responds to Dr. Dunn memo on possible shutdown risk

Gov. Gary Herbert released a statement on Twitter on Monday night responding to the contents of a memo where state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn warned another shutdown might be necessary to control the outbreak in Utah. "Dr. Dunn’s internal memo raises alarm about the increasing COVID-19 cases in Utah. I appreciate her analysis and share many of her concerns. We will work to stem this tide, but I have no plans to shut down Utah’s economy," Herbert's tweet stated. "I urge Utahns to protect themselves and their loved ones from the spread of the virus by following our common sense guidelines for social distancing, good hand hygiene and especially the use of face coverings."

MLB plans 60-game slate, shortest since 1878, as union balks

Major League Baseball plans to unilaterally issue a 60-game schedule for its shortest season since 1878 after the players' association rejected a negotiated deal of the same length, putting the sport on track for a combative return to the field amid the coronavirus pandemic. Commissioner Rob Manfred and union head Tony Clark met last week and outlined plans that included expanding the playoffs from 10 teams to 16, widening use of the designated hitter to National League games and an experiment to start extra innings with a runner on second base. But the latest version of the deal proposed by MLB was rejected by the Major League Baseball Players Association’s executive board in a 33-5 vote on Monday. — Associated Press

Trump administration extends visa ban to non-immigrants

The Trump administration on Monday extended a ban on green cards issued outside the United States until the end of the year and added many temporary work visas to the freeze, including those used heavily by technology companies and multinational corporations.The administration cast the effort as a way to free up jobs in an economy reeling from the coronavirus. A senior official who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity predicted it will open up to 525,000 jobs for Americans. — Associated Press

How you can virtually compete in a Utah running and biking series

Mitt Stewart began organizing the Wasatch Trail Run Series nearly a decade ago. What started as five races at Solitude involving a handful of people turned into a weekly series along the Wasatch Front with upwards of 300 racers, even on a Wednesday evening. The series was set to continue again in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic created statewide shutdowns in March. Even though some of those restrictions are loosened now, holding the weekly series like in years past was simply out of the question. "We basically saw the writing on the wall, that there was most likely not going to be a chance to host races," Stewart told KSL.com Monday. "Just this month, we checked our race venues and we couldn’t run … that’s not going to happen this year due to (COVID-19)." So, race organizers started brainstorming ways to give their regular runners some sort of competition knowing that they wouldn’t be able to stage an event bringing hundreds of people together at the same time. Huntsman cleared to campaign again after COVID-19 isolation

Former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has been cleared by the Salt Lake County Health Department to resume campaigning in the upcoming GOP gubernatorial primary race after being in quarantine since June 6 because of COVID-19. Huntsman, who is running to be elected for what would be a third term as governor against Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, former Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes and former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright, tested positive for the novel coronavirus on June 10, after initially being told he had tested negative. He had already gone into quarantine four days earlier after members of his campaign staff tested positive, and has participated remotely in events including the final gubernatorial primary debate last week. Huntsman’s wife, Mary Kaye, tested positive June 18 and remains in isolation. — Lisa Riley Roche, KSL

University of Utah revises visitation guidelines

University of Utah Health facilities eased its visitation guidelines on Monday amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. The hospital initially limited visitors on March 25. Under those new rules, visitors weren’t allowed except for those visiting patients in end-of-life care, patients with mental disabilities and minors. While patients are still discouraged from bringing visitors, the new guidelines released on Monday allow inpatients to have one visitor 18 years or older during visiting hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Utah epidemiologist warns state is in COVID-19 acceleration phase, shutdown could be 'only viable option'

After Utah again broke its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases on Friday — then again on Saturday — state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn warned another shutdown might be necessary to control the outbreak. In a Utah Department of Health memo sent on Friday, and released to the public Monday, Dunn said the state is currently in an “acceleration phase” of the COVID-19 outbreak. “We are quickly getting to a point where the only viable option to manage spread and deaths will be a complete shutdown,” the memo states. “This might be our last chance for course correction. Contact tracing and testing alone will not control this outbreak.” — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Here are updated release dates for new movies delayed by COVID-19

Some theaters here in Utah, and across the country, plan on opening in July. Studios have started announcing new release dates for some of those titles we’ve been waiting for and were supposed to get all the way back in April. Orlando Pride withdraw from National Women's Soccer League Challenge Cup due to COVID-19

The Orlando Pride have withdrawn from the National Women's Soccer League Challenge Cup due to positive COVID-19 tests among players and coaches, the club said Monday. The Challenge Cup is scheduled to take place this weekend at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. Utah Royals FC are scheduled to participate in the competition, which will feature the seven other teams in the league. “This was obviously a difficult and disappointing outcome for our players, our staff and fans, however this is a decision that was made in order to protect the health of all involved in the Challenge Cup,” Orlando Pride Executive Vice President Amanda Duffy said in a news release. “While we were all excited to see the 2020 Pride on the field this weekend, our priority is now making sure our players and staff safely recover and providing any support wherever and however possible.” According to an NWSL statement, six players and four staff members of the club tested positive. Those who tested positive will be isolated for 14 days and will receive medical care. Surging US virus cases raise fear that progress is slipping

Alarming surges in coronavirus cases across the South and West raised fears Monday that the outbreak is spiraling out of control and that hard-won progress against the scourge is slipping away because of resistance among many Americans to wearing masks and keeping their distance from others. Confirming predictions that the easing of state lockdowns over the past month and a half could lead to a comeback by the virus, cases surpassed 100,000 in Florida, hospitalizations are rising dramatically in Houston, and a startling 1 in 5 of those tested in Arizona are proving to be infected. —Associated Press

Utah sees 444 new cases of COVID-19, no new deaths

After several record-setting days in a row of new COVID-19 cases, Utah has been back below 500 new cases for the past two days. The state is still seeing hundreds of new cases, however. Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 444 from Sunday, with no new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Monday's totals give Utah 17,906 total confirmed cases, with 1,192 total hospitalizations and 158 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 17,462 cases in the state. 'Hamilton' movie trailer released ahead of July 3 Disney+ premiere

A filmed version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is set to premiere on streaming service Disney+ on July 3. The 60-second trailer, released Sunday, shows a montage of scenes from the critically acclaimed drama, set to a mash-up of the show's opening number, "Alexander Hamilton," and "Satisfied." The "Hamilton" movie was originally scheduled to arrive in cinemas in October 2021, but the studio opted to release the film early on its subscription streaming service amid the coronavirus pandemic. Existing home sale plunge 9.7% in 3rd straight monthly drop

Existing home sales in the U.S. plunged 9.7% in May. It was the third straight monthly decline and further evidence of the harm the virus pandemic has done to the housing market. The National Association of Realtors said Monday that the monthly decline pushed sales down to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.91 million, the slowest pace since a home buyers tax credit expired in October 2010. — Associated Press

Herriman City mails out coupons, encourages residents to shop local

Herriman City is getting creative to encourage residents to shop local and help businesses bounce back from the impacts of the pandemic. They are calling this $110,000 investment “Herriman Bucks.” “They started going out in the mail at the end of May, and we’ve sent one to each of the 13,000 households in the city,” said Tami Moody, Herriman City spokesperson. The program gives Herriman residents a coupon to get $10 off a $20 purchase at a participating business. — Ashley Moser, KSL TV

Salt Lake County extends free COVID testing, even for those without symptoms

The Salt Lake County Health Department announced it will continue its free COVID-19 testing through June 28, even for Utahns who aren’t experiencing symptoms. This comes after a weekend of new spikes in Utah, hitting record numbers with 643 confirmed cases Saturday. Testing will be provided every day from Monday to Sunday with varying times. From Macy’s “Miracle on 34th Street” store to the World Trade Center's office towers, New York City hits a key point Monday in trying to rebound from the nation’s deadliest coronavirus outbreak. For the first time in three months, New Yorkers will be able to dine out, though only at outdoor tables. Shoppers can once again browse in the city’s destination stores. Shaggy heads can get haircuts. Cooped-up kids can finally climb playground monkey bars instead of apartment walls. Office workers can return to their desks, though many won’t yet. — Associated Press

The Utah Department of Health Sunday is reporting 394 new cases cases of COVID-19 and three new deaths in the state.

The World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours.
