WHO reports largest single-day increase in COVID-19

The World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases by its count, at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours. The UN health agency said Brazil led the way with 54,771 cases tallied and the U.S. next at 36,617. Over 15,400 came in in India. Experts said rising case counts can reflect multiple factors including more widespread testing as well as broader infection. Overall in the pandemic, WHO reported 8,708,008 cases — 183,020 in the last 24 hours — with 461,715 deaths worldwide, with a daily increase of 4,743. More than two-thirds of those new deaths were reported in the Americas. — Joseph Wilson and Jamey Keaten, Associated Press

Weber County inmate tests positive for COVID-19

An inmate at the Weber County Correctional Facility has tested positive for COVID-19, the Weber County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook Sunday. "The inmate has been placed in isolation and is under the care of our medical staff," the sheriff's office said. The office will work with the Weber-Morgan Health Department to test more staff and inmates, it said. At the beginning of the pandemic, the facility limited some services and programs to inmates but reintroduced some as the county moved to the yellow, low-risk phase under the state's plan. "In the days ahead, we will be re-evaluating these services and will provide information on the status of those services/programs on our social media sites," the sheriff's office said.

'Second wave' of COVID-19? Not yet, experts say

What's all this talk about a “second wave” of U.S. coronavirus cases? In The Wall Street Journal last week, Vice President Mike Pence wrote in a piece headlined “There Isn’t a Coronavirus ‘Second Wave'" that the nation is winning the fight against the virus. Many public health experts, however, suggest it's no time to celebrate. About 120,000 Americans have died from the new virus and there are worrisome recent increases in reported cases in the South and West. But there is at least one point of agreement: “Second wave” is probably the wrong term to describe what's happening. — Mike Stobbe, Associated Press

Health department reports 394 new coronavirus cases, 3 new deaths

The Utah Department of Health Sunday is reporting an additional 394 cases of COVID-19. This comes a day after Utah saw it's record high of 643 cases. Three new deaths have also been reported Sunday. The state now has a total of 17,462 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic with 158 total deaths. — Jen Riess, KSL.com

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

The Utah Department of Health Saturday is reporting an additional 643 cases of COVID-19 in the state one day after the department revealed what was then a single-day high of 586 cases.

Stephen Moore, a member of President Donald Trump’s economic task force, said that Utah is in good shape compared to much of the rest of the country to recover from the economic impact of COVID-19
