SALT LAKE CITY — Projects to repave and repair parts of southbound I-15 in Salt Lake and Juab counties are expected to create "heavy" delays for motorists planning to head to southern Utah this weekend, Utah Department of Transportation officials warned Thursday.

Two of those projects are expected to wrap up by early Monday morning, but all could add delays for travelers, according to Utah Department of Transportation spokesperson John Gleason.

The first project is I-15 in Salt Lake City. The freeway will be reduced to one lane in areas stretching from Beck Street to 2100 South. This will happen beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, then again at 9 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday while crews work to repair concrete pavement. The heaviest backups from this project are expected Sunday.

Another backup is expected between the Sevier River bridge and Juab and Millard county border where crews continue to work to rebuild pavement. The agency said motorists heading to southern Utah should expect upward of 30-minute delays or more in the area this weekend.

The project began earlier this year, and UDOT had previously had all lanes opened of the 7-mile stretch during the weekend, according to Gleason. This weekend, however, he said traffic will be reduced to just one lane to allow crews to work on needed paving for the project. Only one lane will be open in the area until June 19.

A third project at the I-15/I-215 interchange in Murray won’t be as long. The ramp from westbound I-215 to southbound I-15 will be closed from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday to allow crews time to work on ramp bridges in relation to UDOT’s I-15 southbound project that will add a new travel lane on I-15 southbound from state Route 201 to 12300 South.

In addition to the delays around Salt Lake City this weekend, Gleason added that similar lane closures are expected to happen between 500 South and 2100 South over the course of the next three weekends to finish repairing concrete pavement in the area.
